Big Sky Youth Empowerment (BYEP) is a nonprofit adventure-based mentoring program in Bozeman, Montana, that has served vulnerable youth in the Gallatin Valley for the past 24 years. BYEP offers a group social emotional life skills curriculum paired with outdoor adventures to youth in grades 7-12, serving around 150 teens annually. Our mission is to create a transformative community where vulnerable teenagers experience belonging, purpose, and well-being through group mentorship, adventure, and connection with the natural world.
The Communications & Events Manager (CEM) works directly with the Executive Director, Grants & Data Manager, and Development Manager as a part of the BYEP Development Team. As a BYEP ambassador, they carry BYEP’s brand and voice, oversee all external communication, and share BYEP’s impact with donors and supporters. This includes writing emails, updating BYEP’s website, managing social media channels, running fundraising campaigns, and working with vendors for any marketing needs. They are an expert storyteller as well as an event planner, who plays a critical role on our fundraising team and helps the organization successfully execute 4+ annual events that raise over $620,000 annually.
The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter and creative thinker who works with a strategic mindset. They have strong attention to detail, strong writing skills, and are able to expertly communicate with donors, colleagues, and various stakeholders. This candidate shares a passion for building community, loves the outdoors and BYEP’s mission, and brings a fun, positive energy to the workplace.
Key Responsibilities
Marketing & Communications
- Manage BYEP’s brand and voice, and serve as point person for all communication for BYEP
- Write emails and all external communication from the organization including a quarterly newsletter, appeal speeches, and campaigns
- Manage BYEP’s email list of ~5,000 subscribers and strategically segment communications based on donor base
- Create and manage the execution of fundraising campaigns targeting specific donor journeys including End of Year, Direct Mail, and Give Big Gallatin Valley
- Create content for and post on BYEP’s social media channels
- Capture and write stories of BYEP’s impact by talking with teens, mentors, alumni, and staff
- Join workshops and adventures to take photos and video of BYEP’s programs
- Update BYEP’s website as needed
- Ensure BYEP’s presence in the community with ads, press articles, and participation in local events
- Oversee design and creation of all marketing materials, collateral, graphic design, event design, video creation, and annual report
Event Planning
- Plan and execute 4 major events every year, including planning, decor, venue communication, sourcing and managing vendors, and overall organization
- Effectively co-manage budgets in excess of $250,000 annually on major events
- Collaborate with Development Manager and vendors on print collateral, invite and communications strategies, and event themes
- Creatively assess every event and implement solutions to improve revenue
- Recruit, schedule and support teen participant/alumni speakers for events
Miscellaneous
- Act as the point person and manage various software and integrations including BYEP’s donation platform (Classy, Zapier, Jotform, etc.)
- Create reports and complete regular CRM maintenance and clean up
- Assist with program-related needs and general staff duties as necessary
- Represent BYEP at community tabling events throughout the year as needed, such as movie screenings, pint nights, Christmas Stroll, etc.
Requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Degree in Marketing, Writing, Communications, or related field
- 3+ years of related experience
- Ability to effectively multitask and problem solve without direct supervision or guidance
- Excellent writing, communication, organization and project management skills
- Experience in email marketing, email segmentation and donor journeys
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google Suite
- Ability to work effectively with different teams and individuals within the organization
- A clean driving record and ability to pass a comprehensive federal background check
- Ability to occasionally lift and move supplies / event materials weighing up to 30lbs
Preferred
- 5+ years experience in fundraising, communications, or related field
- Familiarity with Salesforce NPSP or equivalent CRM platform
- Experience using fundraising platforms such as Classy
- Experience in photography, videography, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.), Canva
- Experience with web design with knowledge of best SEO practices
- Experience with event management, tabling, or acting as an ambassador for an organization
