Company History

Danny Thomas asked Americans of Arabic-speaking heritage to embrace St. Jude as a way of repaying America for the opportunities given to them and their families. Danny Thomas and approximately 100 leaders from these communities around the country founded ALSAC in 1957. The late Michael F. Tamer, inspired by Danny Thomas’ vision of a hospital to research and treat catastrophic childhood illnesses, became ALSAC’s first chief executive. Tamer worked closely with Danny Thomas to lead ALSAC in fulfilling its mission. From its humble beginnings, ALSAC has grown to be America’s second largest health-care charity. In fiscal year 2009, ALSAC raised $682 million. Yet, the average individual donation is only $30.09.
